Northstar starts Saturday 9/26 at the Troop 120 Scout Hut in Everman.
See attached flyer for details.
North Star is the Tejas District’s nickname for the BSA Basic Boy Scout Leader Training courses. This training follows the BSA training syllabi and is comprised of three sections. All three parts must be completed in order to earn the Tejas District North Star patch and BSA “Trained” patch. All sessions are also required for Scoutmasters and Asst. Scoutmasters to meet the pre-requisites for Wood Badge Advanced Leader Training.
The sessions may be taken separately, if that better fits your personal schedule, but it is recommended that you take them together, if possible, because you will have better continuity with your fellow participants, especially on the campout portion.
1. This Is Scouting (formerly New Leader Essentials) (approx 1 hr. on-line)
This is the basic Scout leader training, common for Cub and Boy Scout leaders and is now offered on-line at the National BSA website: https://myscouting.scouting.org. If this is your first time, you will need to set up an eLearning account on this site.
While it is recommended to be completed prior to the SM Specific Training session, it may be completed any time. If you have taken it once, you do not need to repeat it. Please print out the completion verification and bring to your first staffed session for credit towards your North Star patch.
Note: while you are at the BSA eLearning website, consider completing the Youth Protection Training as well. Though not formally part of North Star it is required for most of your Scout leader activities.
2. Scoutmaster Specific Training (approx 6 hr.)
This is required for Scoutmasters and Asst. Scoutmasters to be considered “fully trained”, but is recommended for ALL Boy Scout troop leaders as well as Cub leaders who will be crossing into a troop within the next year. Topics include: troop organization, the patrol method, the “youth-led” troop, the Patrol Leaders Council, planning and conducting the troop meeting and outdoor program, the uniform, the Troop Committee, the roles of the district Key Three, and much more.
3. Outdoor Leader Skills Training (weekend campout)
This weekend campout is where you will camp and cook in patrols like a Scout troop. Basic Scout skills include: map & compass, first aid, camping, backpacking, cooking, camp set-up, and much more. The planning for this campout will be discussed at the Patrol Meeting during session 2.
This is not BALOO Training and will cover much, much more.
